There is already a sanction from the disciplinary body of the CONMEBOL after what happened in the Uruguay-Colombia of last July 10th America Cup. A match that was marked by a pitched battle in the stands between Colombian fans and three Uruguayan players: Darwin Núñez, Ronald Araujo and José María Giménez. The incidents also led to the expulsion of Uruguayan Guillermo Valera after allegedly hitting a member of the Colombian Football Federation.
As a result of the same, the disciplinary body has decided to sanction and suspend the footballer for two games. According to the text: “SSUSPEND the player GUILLERMO VARELA OLIVERA for 2 (two) matches, including the automatic suspension match already imposed. This sanction must be fulfilled in accordance with the provisions of article 144 of the CONMEBOL Copa América USA 2024 Regulations and articles 70 and following of the CONMEBOL Disciplinary Code.“.
The court has also imposed a fine of four thousand dollars (3,663 euros) on the player. As the ruling makes clear, there is no appeal. We will see if the Uruguayan players involved in the brawl are finally sanctioned.
More than 100,000 euros to Mexico
In addition, CONMEBOL has fined Canada 3,000 dollars (2,747 euros) as a result of the match against Argentina on July 9. In that same match, the AFA was fined 15,000 dollars (13,736 euros). A heavy financial penalty was imposed on Mexico for what happened in the match against Ecuador on June 30. A fine of 105,000 dollars (96-154 euros) plus a warning for the future.
