Inegi: 2023 is the year with the fewest homicides so far in AMLO's six-year term

For men, the rate in 2023 was 43.1 homicides per 100,000 male inhabitants, which represents a decrease compared to 2022, whose rate was 45.8 with definitive data.

While in the case of women, the homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants went from 6.0 in 2022 with definitive data, to 5.4 in 2023.

It should be noted that the statistics from Inegi, an autonomous body, come from the administrative records of deaths of the states, including 321 Civil Registry offices, 105 forensic medical services and 236 agencies of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, while the Government data comes from the investigation files of prosecutors’ offices.

The states with the most homicides

The entities with the highest number of homicides in 2023 were:

  • Guanajuato, with 3,746 homicides.
  • State of Mexico, with 2,849 homicides.
  • Baja California, with 2,642 homicides.
  • Chihuahua, with 2,396 homicides.

While the states with the lowest number of homicides recorded in 2023 were:

  • Baja California Sur, with 47 homicides.
  • Yucatan, with 52 homicides.
  • Durango, with 89 homicides.
  • Aguascalientes, with 114 homicides.

Meanwhile, Mexico City recorded 658 homicides in 2023.

The Inegi report also revealed that 70% of the homicides recorded in 2023 occurred with firearms, followed by knives (9.5%) and hanging (7%).

On May 6, López Obrador acknowledged that there were more homicides in the country, but denied that there is more violence. The president also criticized the claim that his administration is the one with the most violent deaths, as he insisted that there is no recognition of how his predecessors left the country in terms of violence.
