Puerto Plata.- In the framework of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, institutions from the public and private sectors, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and religious groups from the province of Puerto Plata, together with the Community House of Justice, organized the conference-panel “Don’t get carried away” to share information with the population and raise awareness about this crime.
Within the framework of this meeting, the magistrate, Yoanna Bejarán, director of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office against Illicit Trafficking of Migrants and Human Trafficking (PETT), offered the keynote lecture “Impact of human trafficking from the perspective of human rights and security for the Dominican Republic.”
Judge Bejarán highlighted the commitment of the Attorney General’s Office to the prosecution of human trafficking crimes, whose category of organized crime makes it especially difficult and dangerous for its victims.
As part of this event, the results of the scope and impact of the anti-trafficking prevention campaign “Don’t Get Carried Away,” sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), were presented.
At the close of the activity, Magistrate Kelmi Duncan, head prosecutor of the Attorney General’s Office in Puerto Plata, and Yadira Núñez, head of the Department of Attention to Violence of the Ministry of Women, participated; they agreed to reaffirm their commitment and determination to implement effective measures and coordinate efforts that significantly contribute to reducing the incidence of this crime in the province.
This initiative was coordinated by the Puerto Plata Tax Attorney’s Office, the Ministry of Women, the Central Directorate of the Tourism Police (POLITUR), as well as entities such as the Center for Promotion and Human Solidarity INC (CEPROSH); the Clara Group; Mujeres Puro Arte; Red Ciudadana, and the Christian Church Vida de Amor; and had the support of the Government of the United States of America through its agency USAID.
The event, which took place on Wednesday, July 31, in the main auditorium of the Technological University of Santiago (UTESA), was attended by authorities, provincial officials, representatives of civil society organizations, academics, and students.
