Low temperatures recorded at night in the Junín region have been affecting the livestock sector, specifically sheep breeders. The cattle breeders showed up at the Yauris fair; however, they arrived with different concerns, as they feel abandoned by the authorities.
Samuel Guerra, representative of Rancho Verde in Usibamba-Concepción, said that during the frost season (from June to September) they can lose up to 30 sheep.
“Each specimen is valued at S/1500 and losses due to frost affect us too much,” said.
Merardo Aquino, a rancher from Dos de Mayo in Usibamba, clarified that he also had 20 sheep losses (between 2 and 3 months old) and a first-time mother, all due to pneumonia caused by the frost, but help is not coming. . “We are nothing to the government,” he pointed.
Both agreed that they prefer to burn the more than 20 kg of wool produced by their sheep since there is no trade. Before, they sold it for S/7.50 per pound (approximately S/15.00 per kilo) and now it is at S/0.50 per kilo. The local sale of sheep meat, in the same market in Concepción, is now the main livelihood of the cattle farmers who are dedicated to raising sheep.
