SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Cuban regime will open new hotels in Cuba In the midst of an economic and health crisis that worsens every day, Cuba’s largest hotel group, Gaviota, confirmed at a press conference in Canada that they are continuing to strengthen the tourism sector on the island.
Officials of that hotel group, which is part of the Business Administration Group (GAESA) of the Armed Forces, reported that in the coming months new hotels will be open to the public, according to the portal Travel Week.
Gaviota has undertaken large investments in the main Cuban tourist centers, to carry out renovations and improvements to its hotels, mainly in Havana, Varadero, Cayo Santa María and Holguín, despite the mediocre figures of international visitors to Cuba.
The military hotel group intends to “develop new products in its properties, specifically for its ‘Playa’ brand. It will implement new modules for families with children, with special rooms for them, as well as premium levels.”
According to the article, to attract the younger market, Gaviota is collaborating with Blue Diamond Hotels to offer specialized music festivals; it will also open a new hotel brand called “Resonance,” which will have “music and entertainment for the younger generation in one section, and relaxation and wellness in the other.”
Among those that will be offering service are hotels in Havana and Holguín. Specifically, they mentioned the opening, at the end of this year, of the Metrópolis, managed by Kempinski. With 219 roomswill be the second Kempinski property in the city, following the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana.
The second section of the Muthu Havana will also be inaugurated before the end of the year and will have 515 rooms, with a new section to be called Muthu Tower.
In addition, the Hotel Corona in Havana, managed by the Turkish hotel chain ATG, will open its doors early next year as a five-star establishment with 147 rooms.
The Iberostar, with 594 rooms, will open its doors in the tallest building in Havana, the controversial K23, November 20th.
At the beginning of next year, a new hotel called Real Aduana will be opened at the cruise port, in the place where the Cuban customs office used to be in the old port.
And in Holguín, one is expected to start in Ramón de Antillas at the end of next year.
Despite the mediocre performance of the tourism sector in Cuba, the regime continues to invest large sums of money in the sector.
Tourism in Cuba is not picking up. The Island received a total of 1,680,485 visitors during the first half of 2024, according to official figures from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI).
Although this number represents an increase of 101.1% compared to the previous year, it barely reflects an increase of 0.9% compared to the same period in 2023. This figure shows that the Cuban tourism sector is still far from achieving the regime’s goal of attracting 3.2 million tourists in 2024.
The negative trend has continued, with the third consecutive month of decline in the arrival of visitors international. Last June, only 134,948 tourists visited the island, compared to 154,590 in the same month last year.
To reverse this negative trend, the Ministry of Tourism is focusing on improving direct air connections to the Island. In contrast, Caribbean tourist destinations such as Punta Cana and Cancun have experienced a significant rebound in the number of visitors post-pandemic, reaching historic levels.
