Lawmakers defend their pensions tooth and nail

Legisladores defienden con uñas y dientes sus pensiones

Following the retirement of some officials with ostentatious sums of money, Deputy Rafaela (Lila) Alburquerque, member of the special Commission that studies the Penal Code, clarified this Wednesday that it is not the Dominican State that pensions the legislators, but the Dominican Congressional Social Security Institute.

“We deposit our money every month, and when we leave, obviously I have to retire,” said Alburquerque.

The legislator of the Chamber of Deputies for San Pedro de Macorís emphasized that the monthly contributions of the congressmen are destined to a fund administered by the Dominican Congressional Social Security Institute, which functions in a similar way to the pension funds of the private sector.

“They debit my salary as if it were a AFP “My own, then my money is there and they can’t deny it to me. It’s 32 years,” he added.

For his part, Congressman Ramón Bueno, of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), also offered his perspective, explaining that “if an official spent four years in the lower house at the age of 35 and lost, the person when he reaches 60 years (25 years later), has the right to claim his money.”

These statements were offered at the Corripio Communications Group Luncheon.
