Spirit Airlines temporarily cancels flights to Nicaragua

Spirit Airlines, based in Miramar, Florida, United States, widely recognized in Nicaragua for offering flights at low prices, decided to temporarily cancel “all flights to and from Nicaragua,” confirmed the travel agency Aeromundo, through a statement posted on social media.

Spirit flights to and from Nicaragua, according to the letter, will be canceled “from the beginning of September until the beginning of December 2024,” that is, for a period of three consecutive months.

Spirit Airlines operates flights departing from Augusto C. Sandino International Airport in Managua to select destinations in the United States, primarily to Fort Lauderdale International Airport in Florida, from which connections can be made to other states in the country.

Aeromundo, a Managua-based travel agency, advised its customers that “if you purchased a Spirit ticket with us, please contact your agent for advice.”

The publication does not detail whether those affected by these cancellations will have any immediate solution, including a refund of the ticket price, rescheduling of the trip with another airline on the date they had booked, or rescheduling of the trip with the availability offered by that same airline.

Spirit Airlines has not confirmed any flight cancellations

Article 66 The company searched through the airline’s social media and website and verified that it has not reported any cancellations of its flights to and from Nicaragua. However, according to the publication of the travel agency Aeromundo, they have communicated directly with those who sell their tickets.

In 2020, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with the extensive requirements imposed by the Ortega dictatorship in Nicaragua, Spirit Airlines suspended for the first time the connections it offered to and from Nicaragua.

In November 2022, Spirit resumed its flight connections to Nicaragua and this would be the second time it has announced the temporary cancellation of its trips, although the reasons are publicly unknown.

The current cancellation of Spirit Airline flights occurs in a context in which the United States Government, since February of this year, has intensified sanctions against transport entrepreneurs and airline executives who it considers promote irregular migration to the United States, using Nicaragua as a stopover. In November of last year, the US authorities initially implemented visa restrictions on charter flight operators arriving in the country.
