“There will be no mercy”: Venezuelan prosecutor announces more than a thousand arrests during protests

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, assured that There will be no mercy for the more than a thousand people arrested during the days of protests following the election results in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Nicolás Maduro the winner.

In addition to the 1,062 detainees, there are 77 officials injured since the protests this Monday, the prosecutor said, and stressed that “there will be no clemency, there will be justice.”

“Don’t be surprised when international human rights organizations come and say that they are political prisoners. I have seen too many things. Yesterday I spoke of 44 wounded officials and one dead, the one in Aragua, today the number has risen to 77.”

He said there was a “tense calm” on Wednesday because “justice is acting” and warned that they would not allow an “escalation of violence.”

As Maduro had already done, prosecutor Saab accused the “comanditos” of Edmundo González’s presidential campaign of allegedly orchestrating the events. “We are now discovering that they were all part of the commandos,” he said.
