AREQUIPA, Peru – The Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL), an organization that promotes human rights and international democratic solidarity, issued a statement this Tuesday, in which he indicates that greater international democratic solidarity is required in the face of the electoral fraud of the Venezuelan dictatorship.
“The truth is that this slow death of democracy in Venezuela took place in full view of everyone and had the complicity of many countries in the region, whose leaders and officials contributed, by action or omission, to legitimizing a dictatorship that forced the exile of millions of Venezuelans,” says the Argentina-based organization.
According to CADAL, it is time to strongly demand a greater commitment to democracy and its defence on an international scale.
“Therefore, it is not enough to denounce what is happening in Venezuela without extending that denunciation to the countries that spoke out recognizing the fraudulent victory of Nicolás Maduro as is the case of dictatorships from China, Russia, Iran, Syria, Belarus, Qatar, Cuba and Nicaragua,” he highlights.
In this regard, the statement demands that countries with democratic governments implement a foreign policy that actively denounces authoritarian states that criminalize dissent.
CADAL stresses that economic and commercial interests cannot take precedence over the defence of human rights and human dignity, a commitment that the international community made on 10 December 1948 when it proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Paris.
The organization recalled that since Hugo Chavez He rose to the presidency of Venezuela on February 2, 1999, after having competed in the free elections of December 6, 1998, a process of progressive erosion of the rule of law began in that country, sustained by discretionary and corrupt management of public funds, as well as an ostensible will to perpetuate himself in power at any price.

CADAL is a private, non-profit, non-partisan foundation established on February 26, 2003 in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Its members come from different fields, such as academia, journalism, consulting, and human rights activism.
The post-electoral crisis in Venezuela
