Chilean airline LATAM suspends flights to Venezuela

AREQUIPA, Peru – Chilean airline LATAM announced on Tuesday through a statement on X (formerly Twitter) the temporary suspension of flights between Lima and Caracas.

“Due to the Venezuelan aeronautical authority’s decision to temporarily suspend all flights between Peru and Venezuela, we are forced to suspend our operations from July 31 to August 31, 2024,” the company said.

After the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE), controlled by Chavismo, accredited the presidential election on July 29 to the dictator Nicolás Maduroprotests against electoral fraud have broken out and the regime’s repression has intensified.

In this regard, LATAM assured that its measure would prioritize the protection of passengers, since acts of violence have been reported in Venezuelan territory.

“We care about our passengers, which is why we have provided various commercial flexibilities for changes and/or refunds without any additional cost, which can be managed from the ‘My trips’ section,” the airline adds.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil announced on Tuesday the breaking of diplomatic relations with Peru, after the government of Dina Boluarte did not recognize the official results of the Venezuelan presidential elections.

Protests and other reactions to the post-election situation

Meanwhile, the situation in Venezuela remains tense and at least 13 people have died during popular protests against the electoral fraud perpetrated by Nicolás Maduro on July 28. The demonstrations, which have spread to several cities in the country and have been repressed by the Chavista armed forces, have also left dozens injured and arrested.

The protests were triggered after the regime of Nicolás Maduro declared itself the winner and was willing to govern for six more years.

The multinational organization also states that the figures published by the CNE presented “arithmetic errors” and that these irregularities were part of “a coordinated strategy to undermine the integrity of the electoral process.”
