AMLO: Trump has been respectful; proposal to send military is rhetoric

In an article in the Rolling Stone Magazineit is explained that Donald Trump’s proposal would be implemented with or without the consent of the Mexican government.

“Trump has privately backed the idea of covertly deploying, with or without the consent of the Mexican government, special operations units that would be tasked, among other missions, with assassinating the leaders and principal enforcers of Mexico’s most powerful and notorious drug cartels,” the article reads.

This is not the first threat that Donald Trump has made against Mexico, who on other occasions has proposed bombing or invading the country in response to the fentanyl crisis.

When questioned about this approach, President López Obrador insisted that, during election time, candidates aim to get votes, so they make proposals that they will not necessarily fulfill.

“Here in Mexico, it used to be that people offered, offered, offered. A candidate would come to a town and say, ‘I’m going to build a bridge for you.’ People would say, ‘But there’s no river here.’ The answer was, ‘We’re going to build a river for you.’ So now there’s too much talk,” he said.
