The Federal Police (PF) indicted the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, but did not provide details of the indictment or the crimes he is being charged with, as the investigation is under judicial secrecy. For the same reason, neither the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) nor the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) have provided information about the case.
In December 2023, the Operation Seventh Mandatefrom the PF, carried out search and seizure warrants to investigate alleged bribes in contracts for social projects of the state government.
Castro was not the target of any warrants in the operation, but at the time, the state government reported that the Seventh Mandate did not bring any new elements to the investigation, which had been ongoing since 2019, and that there was no evidence against the governor.
On Tuesday (30), the state government’s press office released a new note, in which it informs that Castro’s defense is filing a request to nullify the investigation report that indicts the head of the Rio de Janeiro government.
“It is strange that, in all these years, the governor has not even been called to provide any clarification on the facts. The information supporting the investigation is unfounded and the defense reiterates that it all comes down to a criminal denunciation, by a confessed defendant, in documents that are under judicial secrecy and continue to be leaked, which has been contested before the higher courts due to its absolute inconsistency”, states the text.
The note also says that the governor trusts in the Justice system and is sure that everything will be clarified by the end of the legal process.
