The unfortunate event occurred in the early hours of yesterday, when the young motorcycle taxi driver Darwin Paul Cruz Santos (35 years old) returned to his home on Jirón La Mar, across from Libertad in Pueblo Nuevo de Colán after having fun at a social dance at the Revolución stadium.

His relatives reported that “Pepe”, as he was affectionately known, had been savagely beaten by police officers who were providing security at the aforementioned dance. His uncle also suffered head injuries.

The young man, feeling very ill, asked his mother to help him, at which point he fainted in her arms and began to vomit blood and died, amid cries of despair.

Yesterday morning a protest was held outside the Pueblo Nuevo de Colán police station, to demand a thorough investigation into his mysterious death.

“I want justice to be done and for my brother to be paid for his death. He was a young boy, he left my house well and came back dead. He asked me to rub his body. The police are abusive, they are there to take care of us, to defend us, not to kill us. We want justice for Pepe, they killed him, they took him from me,” said a relative of the motorcycle taxi driver.

They said the young man had marks left by the police baton on his body.

“They have marks on their abdomen, back, neck from the blows they received,” said Diana Santos, cousin of the deceased.

The head of the Piura Police Region, PNP General Manuel Farías, assured that personnel from the Homicide and Oficri departments are conducting investigations into the case.

He added that the two suspects were transferred to the city of Sullana for further investigations.

“Everything is under investigation. We know for a fact that there was a social dance, a fight broke out and the boy was removed from the dance by private security,” said Farías.

He stressed that there will be “no esprit de corps” with the police officers involved in this case.

“Investigations will continue with the results of the autopsy and other information,” the general said.
