Alleged smear campaign against First Lady Verónica Alcocer to be investigated

The Attorney General’s Office has opened a preliminary investigation into government officials for an alleged disinformation and smear campaign against Verónica Alcocer, wife of President Gustavo Petro.

The investigation was initiated following a complaint filed in various media outlets, where the first lady denounced a campaign against her that seeks to associate her with corruption. the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) with the purpose of affecting his good name.

This campaign is believed to be being promoted by government officials who apparently provided this information to journalists, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

With the opening of this preliminary investigation, the Attorney General’s Office “seeks to determine the possible participation of public servants in these events and determine whether they incurred disciplinary infractions”.

The corruption scandal at UNGRD, the agency responsible for addressing and preventing emergencies caused by natural disasters in the countrywas uncovered by the press last February and has since grown to include high-ranking government officials.
