At least two people reported dead in Venezuelan protests

MADRID, Spain.- At least two people have died in Venezuela during popular protests against the electoral fraud perpetrated by Nicolás Maduro on July 28. The demonstrations, which have spread across several cities in the country and have been repressed by the Chavista armed forces, have also left dozens injured and arrested.

The first fatal victim was identified as Rancés Yzarra, a 30-year-old student who lost his life at the Maracay Clinical Hospital (HCM), in the state of Aragua. According to reports from the health center, Yzarra was hit by a bullet while protesting in the vicinity of the San Jacinto roundabout. The Venezuelan dictator’s campaign had already been marked by episodes of violence. At a rally on July 17, the president warned of the consequences of not winning the elections: “The destiny of Venezuela in the 21st century depends on our victory on July 28. If we do not want Venezuela to fall into a bloodbath, into a fratricidal civil war, the product of the fascists, let us guarantee the greatest success, the greatest victory.”

During the closing ceremony of his electoral campaign on Bolívar Avenue in Caracas, Maduro reiterated his stance against the opposition, declaring: “We will not allow them to continue causing harm, their time is up (…) There will be an iron fist and justice for the fascists and the violent ones.”

Added to this are the reports of attempted attacks against opposition leaders, such as the one reported by leader María Corina Machado on July 18, after discovering that the brakes on her vehicle had been cut at an event that took place in Barquisimeto, Lara state.
