A low-magnitude earthquake (2.4 mR) was recorded on Monday afternoon (29) in the city of Barueri, in Greater São Paulo. The event occurred around 1:41 pm (Brasília time) and was felt by residents of the cities of Osasco, Carapicuíba and Barueri and in the Pinheiros neighborhood, in the capital of São Paulo.

According to the Seismology Center, everything indicates that the earthquake was of natural origin, caused by great geological pressures acting on the Earth’s crust. However, the center did not rule out the possibility that the tremor could have been caused by quarrying or cement industry activity in the region.

The center also reported that events of magnitude 2 to 3 occur every week in some part of Brazil and most of them are not felt by people. However, in the case of this tremor, which was felt by some people, it is very unlikely that it caused major problems.
