Panamanian government suspends diplomatic relations with Venezuela

José Raúl Mulino / Nicolás Maduro

AREQUIPA, Peru – The Government of Panama announced the withdrawal of its personnel from Venezuela and the suspension of diplomatic relations with the Bolivarian Republic.

This was announced on Monday at a press conference Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino, after the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE), controlled by the Chavista regime, accredited the presidential election to dictator Nicolás Maduro.

“I cannot allow my silence to become complicity,” said Mulino, who assured that the suspension of relations would be effective “until a complete review of the minutes and the computer system of the vote count is carried out that allows us to know the genuine popular will”.

The president also announced that Panama will request a meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), as established in its democratic constitutive charter, to convene a consultation meeting of foreign ministers with the objective of discussing the situation in Venezuela.

The Panamanian Foreign Ministry also issued a statement in which the governments of Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay expressed their “deep concern” about the development of the Venezuelan elections and demanded “a complete review of the results.”

The notice also demands that the vote count be carried out “with the presence of independent electoral observers who ensure respect for the will of the Venezuelan people who participated massively and peacefully” in the elections.

For his part, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, also was pronounced on what happened on July 28 and 28 in Venezuelan territory.

“The elections must be absolutely transparent and verifiable by international observers who are not partisans of the Government. So far, with the information we have, not all the records that could verify the election have been delivered. Until that is done, we as a country will refrain from recognizing what the CNE has indicated,” said the president.

In addition, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said this morning that he will wait for the CNE to finish counting before making a statement and “recognizing the elected government,” a position also taken by the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil.

The revelation of electoral fraud in Venezuela occurred six hours after the closing of the voting tables, after midnight, when the president of the CNE, the Chavista militant Elvis Amorosoone of the founders of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), said that with 80% of the tables counted, Maduro had obtained 51.2% of the votes compared to 44.2% for Edmundo González.
