With the municipal presidencies that will take office after last month’s elections, Morena will consolidate itself as the main political force at that level of government as well and is set to increase the number of districts under its acronym by 96 percent.
In addition, it will remain the only party with at least one municipal presidency per entity, and will become the leading political force in 24 entities of the country at this level.
With various challenge processes still underway, Morena projects that it will govern 1,020 districts, including Veracruz and Durango, the only states in which the municipal presidencies were not renewed in the June 2 elections. It represents 502 more municipalities compared to the 518 it currently governs.
In Baja California and Quintana Roo, he will lead all municipalities; in Chiapas, he will lead 86 of 124 municipalities; in the State of Mexico, 88 of 125 municipalities; in Hidalgo, 71 of 84 municipalities; and in Mexico City, 11 of 16 municipalities.
In states with a PAN majority, such as Guanajuato, with the 16 municipalities that it will govern, it will have a presence in a large part of the industrial corridor focused mainly on the automotive sector.
Despite the results, in Coahuila, Morelos and Tabasco there was a decrease in the number of localities won compared to the previous election.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) was the political force from which Morena snatched the largest number of districts to govern.
He tricolor The PRI ended the first decade of this century with 1,510 municipalities under its colors. Since then, its decline began and in 2016 there were only 889 PRI mayoralties, according to a political map prepared that year by the National Federation of Municipalities of Mexico.
Meanwhile, for 2022, statistics from the National Municipal Information System showed that the PRI had dropped to 265, which still placed it above Morena, which between 2018 and 2021 had 176.
After the last elections, the PAN reported that it leads the winning coalitions in 347 municipalities.
