US has ‘serious concerns’ over Venezuela election results

MADRID, Spain.- The United States has “serious concerns” about the results of the elections in Venezuela, said Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday after it emerged that Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) had declared Nicolás Maduro the country’s “president” for six more years.

The CNE results “do not reflect the votes of the people,” he declared Blinken and called on election officials to publish full results transparently and immediately.

“It is crucial that every vote is counted fairly and transparently, that electoral authorities immediately share information with the opposition and independent observers without delay, and that electoral authorities publish the vote count,” he said.

He also assured that the United States and the international community will be closely monitoring this and will respond accordingly.

The United States Embassy in Venezuela and the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the United States, Brian A. Nichols, they echoed from Blinken’s words.

Shortly before the CNE’s decision was announced, Brian A. Nichols had declared in X: “Venezuelan voters turned out in large numbers to express their will at the polls. It is now up to the electoral authorities to ensure transparency and access for all political parties and civil society to the tabulation of votes and the prompt publication of results. The credibility of the electoral process depends on this.”

The National Electoral Council, controlled by Chavismo, advertisement early Monday morning that Maduro had obtained a majority of votes, without publishing the counts from the polling stations.

According to official information, Maduro obtained 51.2 percent of the votes, beating opposition candidate Edmundo González, who obtained 44.2 percent.

The results were announced in a televised appearance by Elvis Amoroso, the president of the CNE, shortly after midnight Venezuelan time.
