MERIDA, Mexico – The black bug, an invasive pest, affects some 55 hectares of bean lazybones, gentleman, cowpea and green bean in Guantanamo, according to the official press.
Also known as the black bean bug, this pest from Asia is currently spreading through the Guantanamo municipalities of Imías, Maisí and Baracoa, It is read in a report of overcome.
The plague was first reported in Cuba at the beginning of last June.
Controlling it is a challenge for the Agriculture Department in the Upper East, the report added.
The black bean bug, as it is also known, feeds on the leaves and stems of this plant, both nymphal and adult, causing wilting, discoloration and delayed growth.
Reports of this species have been made in recent years in countries on the continent such as Panama, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and the United States.
