The Archbishop of Lima’s message was heard in the front row by the presidents of the main branches of government, who attended the Cathedral of Lima.
Monsignor Carlos Castillo Mattasoglio sent a message of reconciliation—during the Te Deum Mass held this morning in the Cathedral of Lima—to the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, and to the heads of the main powers of the State, who listened to the words of the ecclesiastical authority in silence as a sign of respect for the invocation. He recalled that this is a request that comes from Pope Francis himself.
“As Pope Francis indicated yesterday (from the Vatican), a broad national dialogue is necessary and urgent, which contributes to reconciliation and the construction of a more united, prosperous and fraternal society,” he said during his homily.
Mattasoglio Castillo asked that the reconciliation process begin by listening to the needs of all Peruvians, especially those most in need, in order to propose “fair and true agreements.” He stressed that reconciliation must take place “on the basis of justice” and by discarding “hidden agreements that obscure our future.”
The traditional Te Deum Mass took place from 8 a.m. in the Cathedral of Lima and was attended by the Head of State, ministers of State, congressmen, high-ranking officers of the National Police and the Armed Forces, as well as judicial and diplomatic authorities. They all listened in silence to the monsignor’s message.
Let us remember that the Te Deum is one of the oldest Christian hymns, sung on special occasions such as National Holidays. It is sung as a sign of gratitude to the Christian god and lasts approximately one hour. It is always performed in the Cathedral of Lima.
