“Helmets that are approved, meaning they have gone through a certification process, are very expensive for people who use motorcycles as an economic way to live or to access certain opportunities.
“The growth of the number of motorcyclists is mainly occurring in the more economical segments. They are mostly young men who engage in risky behavior and are novice drivers,” says Gonzalo Peón, director of ITDP Mexico.
For this reason, with the ‘Helmet Coalition’ ITDP has sought to promote the supply of certified helmets at more affordable prices in Mexico.

Bernat stresses the importance of investing in a certified helmet, even preferring the UN22.05 or UN22.06 certification from the United Nations, since these helmets are tested in independent laboratories, as opposed to the DOT which relies on self-reporting by helmet manufacturers.
“Cheap can be very expensive when it comes to dealing with an accident. It should be noted that the costs of helmets that are approved by the United Nations are more in the range of 1,800 pesos and helmets with the DOT reference standard can be safe helmets starting at around 1,300 pesos.
“A helmet that costs 1,800 pesos will guarantee your life in 42% of accidents and will prevent injuries in 69% of cases,” he says.
Saúl Gómez, spokesperson for Ni Un Repartidor Menos – a group that has mobilized to demand better safety conditions for delivery men and women – recognizes the importance of wearing a helmet and points to the responsibility of motorcyclists.
