Dr. Garcia: «You have to know how to identify sleep apnea, this disorder can shorten life»

Diego García, neurologist and international director of the European Sleep Institute, explains that sleep apnea can cause three times more strokes and twice as many heart attacks than in a person who does not suffer from it.

“People who suffer from it are often unaware that they have it. That is the first problem. It is characterized by severe snoring at night, accompanied by pauses in breathing. The person who suffers from it notices that they have a very dry mouth, perhaps a bit of a headache in the morning, but above all a feeling of not having slept enough,” said Dr. García.

He said that although sleep apnea is a factor that can shorten life, it is a condition that is rarely treated and that the biggest problem is identifying it.
