The increase in the transfer of pets The situation has led the authorities of the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) to implement measures to facilitate these trips. From the beginning of 2023 to May 2024, 44,335 pet entries were recorded in Chile through the Santiago Airport alone, showing a significant increase compared to previous years. At the same time, 30,479 pet exits were observed from the country, with popular destinations such as Argentina, countries of the European Union, Colombia, the United States and Peru. This increase in pet mobility has prompted authorities to look for more efficient and accessible solutions for pet owners.
To expedite the procedures, the SAG has introduced the option to request the zoosanitary certificate digitally through the Cerofilas platform. This certificate, essential for travelling with pets, no longer needs to be physically collected at an office, at least in the case of some destinations such as Argentina. Since the implementation of this measure, more than 1,100 digital certificates have been issued, which can be verified using a QR code and are valid for 60 days, provided that the rabies vaccine is current. This digitalisation represents a significant advance in the comfort and efficiency of the process for travellers.
The rise of travel with pets This has been a challenge not only for the authorities, but also for the infrastructure of Santiago Airport. Manuel Valencia, Deputy Manager of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Nuevo Pudahuel, has announced the creation of special areas for animals both in external and internal areas of the International Terminal. He also highlighted the need to consider pets as “frequent travellers”, a recognition of the growing importance of these travelling companions.
José Guajardo Reyes, national director of SAG, has emphasized the institution’s commitment to facilitate the channels for submitting applications and to making transparent the requirements demanded by the different countries. To travel with pets outside of Chile, it is essential to obtain a Zoosanitary Export Certificate (CZE), issued by the SAGwhich certifies compliance with the health requirements of the destination country. This certificate can be requested digitally through Cerofilas or in person at any SAG sector office, with a minimum delay of 3 business days for delivery.
An important change to be aware of is the new regulations for bringing dogs into the United States, effective August 1. Dog owners will need to make sure their pets are pets are over six months old, have a microchip associated with the rabies vaccine and meet other specific requirements depending on the risk in the country of origin. This measure has been implemented to strengthen health controls and ensure public health.
