President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considered that there is a rebellion
in the conservative bloc that wants to modify the constitutional provisions that govern the legal margins established for overrepresentation in Congress.
The opposition’s intention, he said in yesterday’s morning press conference, is to prevent the transformation movement from reaching a qualified majority in the Legislature, which would represent an obstacle for the parties that make up the movement to have the possibility of modifying the Constitution to, among other things, implement judicial reform.
The federal president accused that there is a campaign of the spokesmen and cronies
of the conservative bloc to impose a new interpretation of what is established in the law of laws
: the Magna Carta.
When they dominated the government and of course the Legislative Branch, they made the laws that suited them and, as they forgot to change them and continue to follow those same laws, now that they no longer suit them, they no longer want to respect them.
He stressed that months ago, when he sent the electoral reform to Congress, the opposition parties were given the opportunity to resolve the dilemma of over-representation that they are now complaining about.
Alleged illegality
And what did they do? They voted against to maintain what they had approved in the Constitution.
the head of the Executive retorted to the opposition voices that have alluded to an alleged illegality because the coalition formed by Morena, PT and PVEM will have a qualified majority.
“They don’t want to respect what is in the Constitution, so they start to say: ‘How can they have 66 percent if they got 52 percent, 55 percent? There is representation.’ That’s what the law of laws establishes. It’s how you want to interpret it because, if there are 300 federal electoral districts and the transformation movement wins 85 percent, why wouldn’t it have a qualified majority?” he explained.
In contrast, he said, the PRI, PAN and PRD coalition obtained between 10 and 12 percent of the electoral districts, while Movimiento Ciudadano obtained between 3 and 4 percent.
He said that the opposition’s goal is to prevent the judicial reform from being approved so that corruption remains in power and it is at the service of a minority.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde, criticized the opposition, for hypocrisy
demands that the rule of law be respected, but calls for the Constitution to be violated in order to limit overrepresentation.
