Article 19 to offer workshop on freedom of expression in Cuba

MADRID, Spain.- The regional organization and Human Rights Defender, Article 19 announced the holding of the “Freedom of Expression Workshop – Cuba”, a four-week intensive course that will begin on August 12. This workshop is especially aimed at journalists, activists, artists and anyone interested in human rights who resides in Cuba.

The main objective of the workshop is to provide methodological elements and training content on human rights, freedom of expression, freedom of the press, Documentation of violations of freedom of expression and comprehensive protection. Participants will learn to critically analyse the exercise of these rights and to document attacks effectively.

The workshop’s methodological proposal includes the review, analysis and reflection on materials and thematic content related to human rights and freedom of expression. This will be achieved through both personal and group techniques and exercises, which will allow participants to generate proposals for the incorporation and development of these rights in their daily practice.

The workshop will be held virtually, with synchronous sessions every Friday and additional work on the Odoo platform on Mondays and Wednesdays. Thematic content to be covered during the course includes:

  1. Freedom of expression and press
  2. Documentation of violations of freedom of expression
  3. International mechanisms (precautionary measures and urgent actions)
  4. Integral protection

Article 19 made a call through the social network X, inviting all interested parties to register. “If you are interested in learning about the right to freedom of expression and you live in #Cuba, this workshop is for you,” the organization said. Article 19 Mexico and Central America is an independent and nonpartisan organization that promotes and defends the rights of freedom of expression and access to information, based on the highest international human rights standards. Your mission is to proactively contribute to ensuring that all people can seek, receive and share information, and express themselves in an environment of safety, equality and inclusiveness. Article 19’s vision is a region where all people can freely express themselves and exercise their right to access information, thereby facilitating informed decision-making and the full realization of other individual rights.

Among the numerous complaints of violations of human rights and freedom of expression in Cuba made by the organization is a statement issued in March of this year. The statement highlighted the increased risk conditions for journalists on the island, due to systematic practices that violate their rights by the State.

The organization regretted that the regime has built a “state infrastructure (…) to prevent and sanction the practice of independent journalism.” It also stressed the importance of journalistic work in Cuba, especially in the face of adversities such as “harassment,” the risk of “paying with jail or exile” and being the object of “smear and defamation campaigns.”

He also acknowledged that thanks to the independent journalism The multidimensional crisis facing Cuba has become visible, including the scarcity of basic resources such as water, food and medicine, and infrastructure problems such as “garbage accumulating on corners, generating hotbeds of infection.”

As on previous occasions, Article 19 warned of “serious violations of human rights” in Cuba and called on the international community to be alert to any mobilization and repressive response from the Cuban State, urging the adoption of “firm and decisive positions and actions in favor of the dignity of Cubans.”
