Brazil and Colombia decide not to send electoral observers for #28Jul

Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court has said it will not allow “the seriousness and integrity of the elections and electronic voting machines” in that country to be “undermined by lies.” In Colombia, the mission requested by Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo was suspended


The Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court and the Colombian government on Wednesday decided not to send observation missions to the Venezuelan presidential election, scheduled for Sunday, July 28.

The Electoral Court of BrazilElectoral Court of BrazilIn a statement, the United Nations announced that in response to attacks by Nicolás Maduro against the country’s electoral system, it had decided to suspend the sending of an electoral observation mission.

“In light of the false statements against Brazilian electronic voting machines, which, contrary to what Venezuelan authorities claim, are auditable and secure, the Superior Electoral Court will not send technicians to respond to an invitation made by the National Electoral Commission of that country to monitor the elections next Sunday,” the organization said.

He also said that he “does not accept that, internally or externally, through statements or acts that are disrespectful to the fairness of the Brazilian electoral process, the seriousness and integrity of the elections and electronic voting machines in Brazil are being undermined, disqualified with lies.”

On Tuesday, during a campaign event, Nicolás Maduro questioned the electoral systems of Colombia and Brazil, saying that in those countries “they do not audit a single record.”

The criticism came after the president of Brazil,President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that “Maduro has to learn that when you win, you stay, and when you lose, you leave and prepare for other elections.”

For its part, Colombia cancelled the commission that Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo had requested to go to Venezuela. According to Blu RadioColombia “will wait for results and reactions to take a political and diplomatic position.”

The decisions of both countries are known after the Venezuelan authorities revoked former President Alberto Fernández as electoral observer, after he referred to the electoral process and asked for the recognition of results from both parties.
