They demand a Penal Code that combats impunity and protects citizens’ rights

Demandan un Código Penal que combata la impunidad y proteja derechos ciudadanos

Santo Domingo.-The various social and community organizations that have grouped together in the Citizen Forum, the National Popular Coordinator and the Coalition for Life and Women’s Rights, demanded this Wednesday from the president Luis Abinader to boost a Penal Code that combats impunity and protects people’s rights.

Hundreds of independent citizens gathered in front of the National Palace on Wednesday, demanding that the president approve a Code that is in line with reality.

“For more than 25 years, various sectors of society have raised their voices for a Penal Code that protects rights and effectively confronts corruption and crime. A better Code that combats impunity, contributes to eliminating all forms of violence, strengthens our democracy and advances in building a culture of peace,” the organizations stated in a document read during the demonstration.

They stated that in the face of a new attempt to ignore the desires of Dominican society for a Penal Code that is up to date, citizens and social organizations have raised their voices to twist the arm of those who intended to impose a legislative piece that they describe as disastrous and a step backwards for the country, referring to the project approved by the Senate and under discussion in the Chamber of Deputies.

“Mr. President Luis Abinader, head of state and principal leader of the PRM (Modern Revolutionary Party), and the entire leadership of your party, which for the first time will have a qualified majority in the National Congress, it is time to assume the commitments you made to the Dominican people and guarantee a Penal Code that cares for children, protects the life and health of women, confronts discrimination, does not put obstacles in the way of pursuing corruption, and does not grant special treatment to churches and the military. The country is watching,” they indicated.

They affirmed that the articulated citizenry will keep its eyes open and will not allow setbacks in this or any other reform that could affect the lives of all Dominicans.
