The presidential candidate and the opposition leader from Zulia complained about the obstacles to the massive accreditation of witnesses for the elections of July 28. In Maracaibo, six people hired as transport and sound operators were arrested. The kidnapping of those attending the caravan by alleged collectives was also reported.

The electoral campaign is in its final stretch. Candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and opposition leader María Corina Machado carried out their activities in the state of Zulia, where they supported the denunciation of obstacles to the accreditation of witnesses for July 28, new arrests and intimidation of their supporters.

Accompanied by motorcyclists, minutes after giving a press conference, González and Machado traveled along several avenues in Maracaibo until they reached the large gathering on 77th Street (5 de Julio).

As the caravan passed by, thousands of people cheered, shouted, applauded, waved the flag and showed their signs. “Edmundo, we are with you,” “On the 28th we vote for Edmundo,” “María Corina, we will go all the way,” were some of the slogans chanted by supporters along the route.

“This has been a transformative experience. Venezuela is not the same (…) Today it is clear how powerful it is. Today we defeated this tyranny in the hearts, in the souls and in the streets of Venezuela,” Machado said at the demonstration.

He recalled that there are five days left until the presidential election and thanked the people of Zulia for their support.

Before the call, alleged security officials detained six people who had been hired as transport and sound workers for the opposition candidate’s penultimate campaign event. They also arrested a group of men hooded men kidnapped and they evicted the buses that were transporting the Zulians who were going to participate in the rally.

At the press conference before the caravan, candidate Edmundo González Urrutia reported that he was able to speak with several mayors of the state of Zulia, who told him they were “willing to move forward.” He also regretted the attacks that Machado suffered in order to reach that state.

“There is no obstacle that they put in our way that we cannot overcome,” said the diplomat, who called for compliance with the law.

He also pointed out that his government plan “aims to address the entire national emergency we have, it aims at the re-institutionalization of democracy, the reunion of Venezuelans, and that is a series of measures that it would not be possible to name just one. There are many that we have to apply from the moment we assume the Presidency.”

For his part, Machado reiterated the complaint about the obstacles in the technological platform for the accreditation of witnesses from the Unitary Platform. «The regime, through the CNE, intends to prevent our witnesses from having their credentials to do their work starting this Friday at the installation of the tables.»

He explained that accreditation began on June 28, “and the next day we were the first organization to register 99% of the witnesses (…) Today, a month later, we cannot accredit our witnesses.”

For Machado, this is “a confession from the regime that it knows it has been defeated, but just as we knocked down other obstacles, we are going to knock down this one,” but he said that they are committed to defending the vote in each polling station.

“We are going to win, collect and celebrate from Zulia,” he said.

He also said that Zulia state “is one of the states that has the best results in the simulations and tests that we are carrying out. (…) It is a huge state, we know that we have very distant centers, with poor connectivity, and yet we see the delivery of citizens and we have all the centers and tables covered.”
