MADRID, Spain.- The American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora and ArtesMiami will present the documentary They scream freedom on July 26 and 27 in Miami. The documentary, directed by Taiwanese-American filmmaker Melinda Raebyne, offers an in-depth look at the historic popular demonstrations that shook Cuba on July 11 and 12, 2021 (11J).
They scream freedom uses powerful images and exclusive interviews to portray the bravery and suffering of Cubans during the protests. Through her lens, Raebyne attempts to capture the essence of the social movement that resonated around the world.
Its director, quoted in a release of the event organizers, he said: “Miami, for me, was the only place where the premiere of They scream freedom It should be the voices of those on the Island joining the voices of those in Miami demanding ‘Freedom!’”
“With all of us united to raise their voices with ours, we become a massive wave, a typhoon, a tsunami demanding freedom for those in Cuba, a basic right, a human right. Most importantly, we are saying to those in Cuba: ‘We hear your pleas. They have not fallen on deaf ears. We are with you. We fight with you. We see you, we hear you, and you matter,’” she added.
The launch event will be split into two days. On Friday 26 July, the screening of the documentary will be accompanied by a Q&A session. This discussion will feature Melinda Raebyne, the documentary’s narrator Tommy Clark and the composer of the soundtrack, Jorge Gómez, to offer the audience a deeper insight into its making and the themes it addresses.
On Saturday, July 27, the evening will begin with a reception, giving attendees the opportunity to socialize and reflect on the situation in Cuba before the screening of the documentary. This will be followed by another question and answer session.
In addition to the contribution of music producer Jorge Gómez, the piece had the support of other important Cuban-American leaders such as actor and producer Andy Garcia and the activist Rosa Maria Paya.
They scream freedom has already received international recognition: It won the Best Documentary Director Award at the World Social Film Festival in Italy in 2023, Best PNW Documentary at the Tacoma Film Festival in 2023, and the Freedom of Expression Film Festival Award in 2023.
