Joe Biden says goodbye to re-election and requests support for Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate

US President Joseph Biden announced on Sunday, July 21, that he will not run for re-election in the upcoming presidential election.

In a statement to the nation, Biden highlighted the achievements of his administration over the past three and a half years, including a robust economy, historic reforms in health care and medicines, as well as important advances in social security and justice.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country that I step down,” he said.

Biden told his fellow Democrats that he would not accept the nomination and would instead focus his energies on his duties as president for the remainder of his term.

He also expressed his support for Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party’s candidate in the upcoming elections: “My first decision as the party’s candidate in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it has been the best decision I have ever made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be our party’s candidate this year.”

The president said he would provide more details about his decision in a speech to the nation later this week.
