Today is the Day: the week of the start of the Olympics has a day for writers and grandparents

The biggest sporting event on the planet starts this week. On Friday (26), the opening ceremony of the 33rd edition of the modern Olympic Games will be held in Paris. The event, which runs until August 11, returns after an edition with restrictions imposed by the covid-19 pandemic. The history of gaming is full of remarkable memories. Vehicles from EBC have already talked about some of them like gold in men’s volleyball at the 1992 Olympics and participation in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016. A TV Brazil also told the story of the Olympic medals:

In addition to the start of the Olympic Games, the week also has some commemorative dates. July 25 is the International Day of Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean and Diaspora Women, as well as the National Day of Tereza de Benguela and Black Women. Created to help combat racism and sexism against black women, the date was the subject of this article published in National Radio Agency last year.

Also on July 25th, National Writer’s Day is celebrated, established in 1960 during the 1st Brazilian Writer’s Festival. The date, which pays homage to writers and highlights the importance of the class for Brazilian culture and literature, was the subject of this article in Reporter Brazil in 2019.

The following day, July 26, is also dedicated to grandparents. Grandparents’ Day was created in honor of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, venerated as the parents of Saint Mary and grandparents of the baby Jesus. In 2021, the Rio Magazine took advantage of the date to highlight the importance of the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren. In 2017, the Reporter Brazil also spoke about the date:

Notable figures in art

Three notable figures in the arts are also remembered this week. July 23 marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Ariano Vilar Suassuna, a renowned playwright, novelist, essayist, poet and professor from Paraíba. Known for works such as “O Auto da Compadecida” and for his defense of northeastern culture, his life and work were portrayed in MEC Antenna in 2019. An interview with Suassuna was also the subject of the Remembering is TVfrom the TV Brazil in 2017.

On July 25th, we celebrate the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mattos, better known as Nelson Sargento, the samba legend. Composer, singer, researcher of Brazilian popular music, visual artist, actor and writer, his career was told in a special edition of MEC Radio after his death in 2020.

Sergeant was also honored in the program All Bossasfrom the TV Brazilin 2018.

To close the week, we have the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the French writer Alexandre Dumas. Son of the writer of the same name, Alexandre Dumas “junior” is the author of the novel “The Lady of the Camellias”, which inspired, for example, the opera La Traviata (by Giuseppe Verdi).
