Proton VPN highlighted that the release of the service in the country will help citizens stay informed before, during and after the electoral event on July 28.
The Swiss VPN company Proton, which offers security for browsing the Internet, reported that it will open the service for free throughout Venezuela in order to guarantee citizens free and unrestricted access to information and avoid possible attempts at interference or disinformation campaigns, reported The Whistle.
“We want to ensure that everyone can access accurate information before heading to the polls, so Proton VPN will support voters wherever we can by providing free VPN servers in countries with a history of censorship or political interference in the weeks leading up to their elections,” it notes on its website.
The Swiss company has launched its campaign in 2024, when 60 countries will hold presidential elections, in which some 4 billion people are expected to participate. Proton VPN has made its service free in each of the nations where elections have been held.
“We believe that democracy and democratic values are the best way to preserve the right to privacy and personal freedom. If this year’s elections are held in a fair and transparent manner, and if the results are accepted, it would go a long way towards consolidating democratic norms around the world,” Proton said.
According to the latest study by the Press and Society Institute (Ipys), published in May 2024, in Venezuela there are 46 digital media outlets blocked by private and public internet operators.

The latest Ipysve report highlights that there were 128 violations of digital rights in 2023. It specifies that there were 27 cases of identity theft of media and journalists, 20 cases of criminalization, 17 insults by politicians and supporters against journalists, 15 disqualifications by public officials, in addition to six “cyber threat events and six smear and disinformation campaigns.”
