Labor demand in the information technology (IT) sector constituted 27% of the total demand on web portals between November 2020 and October 2021.
These data are derived from IT Labor Monitor in Uruguay Demand for talent and the ICT industry prepared by the consulting firm Advice, the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technologies (CUTI) and the National Development Agency (ANDE).
For the preparation of this report, a database of 40,454 calls was analyzed o notices published in the main employment portals and virtual job exchanges in Uruguay between the months of November 2020 to October 2021.
Within that database, the monitor differentiated 10,757 (27%) calls that are closely linked to the IT sector. When separating them by branch of activity, it follows that the technology sector constitutes the most important area in portal activity. One in five calls comes from this sector.

The report also points out that the relative weight of the technology area in total demand it has varied between 13% and 24%, with the point of greatest representativeness being found in April 2021.

Compuwork is the portal that has more proportion of calls, around 41%. Second is found LinkedIn nucleating approximately a quarter of the calls, followed by Smart Talent and Buscojobs at around 12%.

Distribution by department
More than half of the calls related to IT are required in Montevideo. The report further explains that “if, instead, only those that effectively have a specific geographical reference in Uruguay are selected, the requirement by the capital increases to 70%, while the remaining 30% is requested in the interior”.
When evaluating the distribution by department (in the calls in which the same is specified), it is found that, After Montevideo, the departments with the highest demand are Salto, Paysandú and Canelones.

Almost half of these surveyed calls have identified some reference to teleworking, which can be carried out in a partial or total modality.

The most demanded profile in the survey is that of developerconstituting more than half of this demand (3,357 calls). They follow the analystforming almost 13% (814) of calls to IT charges by companies in the sector and software architect (378) nucleating 6% of this demand.

General conclusions
According to him director of the consulting firm Advice, Federico MuttoniUruguay has an open window”wide open” linked to employment in technology since “technology is fundamental in the evolution and disruption of entire industries and economies”. Muttoni also highlighted the importance of job postings as an indicator of current technology demand, explaining that while overall employment in the US grew 8% between 2000 and 2020, technology work grew 56%, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. “In Uruguay, technology leads the demand for talent”, he added.
Another of the considerations of the director of Advice is that there is “an increasingly intense war for talent in technology”. Along these lines, he pointed out that competition for trained and experienced people it is no longer local, nor regional, but global” which implies “a cost challenge for companies in Uruguay”.
In turn, he stated that “we must optimize the remote work experience in companies, to retain talent. And in particular in the technology sector. Staffing Industry Analyst expects more US firms rely on talent from abroad and see international expansion as a growth opportunity worth exploring”.
