The electoral campaign has turned the candidate for re-election, Nicolás Maduro, into a phenomenon on social media, especially on the Tik Tok platform, where the president receives thousands of connections daily in the appearances he makes through this channel.
The Spanish media outlet El País, which constantly publishes information hostile to Maduro’s government, has had no alternative but to recognize the socialist leader as “the new king of Tik Tok,” highlighting the president’s popularity on the well-known social network.
“Nicolás Maduro is a rocker and also shows off his love for salsa, but this week, on stage, he did a pop choreography with a dance troupe that accompanies him to his campaign events. The steps were the repetitive and addictive trends that people repeat and consume endlessly on Tik Tok,” reads part of the text.
He acknowledges that Maduro has multiplied his presence on social media and that he has active interaction on “Spotify, WhatsApp channels, a podcast with his wife Cilia Flores and a television show.”
Although the media outlet has an editorial line against Maduro and blatantly promotes the candidacy of the far right, it recognizes that the president has a growing popularity among his followers on social networks, a niche that was previously the majority consumption of anti-Chavez sectors.
“On Tik Tok, in recent months, he has managed to put his videos in the most viewed trends in Venezuela on at least four occasions,” the El País article acknowledges.
The media outlet acknowledges that specialists in social media management studies, “are striking about the good performance that Maduro is having on Tik Tok, which has become the second way, after Instagram, through which Venezuelans consume political news.”
