The UTEC Postgraduate Program in Biosciences and Food Sustainability is launched in August

In August 2024, the Postgraduate Program in Biosciences and Food Sustainability begins, offered by the Agrifood Technology Unit of the Technological University of Uruguay in collaboration with the Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Professionals working in the food industry in the interior of the country and in the region want to continue training, update themselves and strengthen their academic and professional training. This arises from the assessment of the region’s needs in academic matters and gives rise to a proposal for a postgraduate degree in collaboration between the Universidad Tecnológica (UTEC) and the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.

“The industry’s need to update knowledge, promote innovation and incorporate scientific methodology was noted,” explained María Pía Grignola, in charge of coordinating this new academic offering from UTEC. Grignola worked alongside a leading teaching team from the Bachelor’s Degree in Food Analysis offered by UTEC in Paysandú, and in fact it was from there that the proposal to explore the academic continuity of this training arose.

The Graduate Program in Biosciences and Food Sustainability combines the analysis and quality control of food with its biochemical structure and functionality. In parallel, it addresses biotechnology tools with an emphasis on sustainability and combining research.

This new UTEC training program “includes the possibility of completing a diploma, a specialization, and a master’s degree with two focuses: one on biotechnology and the other on nutrition and functionality. In this way, the development and consolidation of UTEC’s educational model is promoted, while at the same time educational continuity is generated with an emphasis on postgraduate training,” explains Grignola.

The postgraduate course is designed to train professionals who incorporate a comprehensive vision of Biosciences for the design of products with a multidisciplinary and updated perspective, with a current, dynamic and modern approach associated with the food sector.

“The proposal is novel and relevant in the country and in the region. We were able to consolidate alliances through national and international agreements,” he added.

The teaching methodology will be flexible and in hybrid mode with a strong commitment to autonomous learning and active student participation.

The programme offers four postgraduate options. The Diploma in Biosciences and Food Sustainability and the Specialisation in Biosciences and Food Sustainability both last one year. Meanwhile, the Academic Master’s Degree in Biosciences and Food Sustainability and the Professional Master’s Degree in Biosciences and Food Sustainability extend for two years in total.

The program aims to train graduates with academic and scientific knowledge, and to promote research with an innovative and entrepreneurial profile in the area of Biosciences and Food Sustainability.
