Yamandú Orsi and Pedro Sánchez met: What did they talk about?

Amid his holiday trip to Spain, Yamandú Orsi, the Frente Amplio presidential candidate who recently emerged victorious in the internal elections, held a crucial meeting with Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish prime minister and leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).

Orsi began his trip to Spain last Friday, July 5, and plans to return to Uruguay this Wednesday, July 17, after a productive stay in the European country.

The meeting between Sánchez and the Frente Amplio leader took place at the PSOE headquarters in Madrid, where Santos Cerdán, the party’s secretary, was also present.

The dialogue between Orsi and Sánchez, as expressed by the PSOE in a statement on its website, focused on the “road map” that will guide the actions of the left in Uruguay in the coming times.

The meeting is part of the commitment of both the PSOE and the Socialist International to strengthen ties with progressive parties in Latin America, encouraging the exchange of ideas and political strategies to promote progressivism and the left in the region.

This is not the first time that Orsi has sought to strengthen ties with Spain, since in 2023, in his role as mayor of Canelones, he met with the Spanish ambassador to Uruguay, Santiago Jiménez Martín, with the aim of strengthening the relationship between Spain and the Canary Islands department.

In another area, after the hectic internal elections of 2024, the political candidates took a well-deserved break, including Álvaro Delgado of the National Party and Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front.

Delgado chose to enjoy a few days of relaxation with his wife in the Dominican Republic, returning to his political activities on July 12 after a short break.

For his part, Orsi decided to travel to Spain with his wife and children, planning his return to Uruguay for July 15, after this time of rest.

Meanwhile, Andrés Ojeda, another of the prominent figures in the primaries, continues to be active in the electoral campaign without stopping during these days of pause, and even announced the incorporation of Gabriela Fossati to his team after the former prosecutor’s resignation from the National Party.
