Cuba’s Comptroller General, Gladys Bejerano (78 years old), who has held the position for 14 years, has been removed from her post, the island’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, confirmed on Friday.

Díaz-Canel said that, after the analysis of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party, the change was determined as part of the “natural process of renewal of the cadres.”

Mirian Marbán González (49 years old), currently the first deputy comptroller general, was approved as her substitute.

“His ethical and revolutionary behaviour is an example of a communist militant for everyone,” Díaz-Canel said of Bejerano.

The change comes amid a government campaign against corruption, the most public and controversial of which was that of former deputy prime minister and former finance minister Alejandro Gil, who was dismissed in February and is currently under investigation by the courts.

Regarding Gil, Bejerano said last May, in an interview with EFE, that the case It felt like a “betrayal” and he said that the deep economic crisis that the island is immersed in has increased corruption somewhat because “there is a greater need” and a shortage “of everything,” although “it does not justify it.”

Marban González is a graduate in History and Accounting and Finance According to the website of the Cuban Communist PartyPrior to her position as Deputy Comptroller General, she worked as an auditor, deputy delegate and delegate at the Delegation of the Ministry of Audit and Control in the Isle of Youth. She was also Deputy Comptroller and Chief Comptroller at the Provincial Comptroller’s Office of Havana.

Gladys Bejerano is the latest high-ranking official to be removed this year. Last May, Cuba’s Council of State dismissed Ricardo Cabrisas as Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, although it kept him in his position as deputy prime minister.

With Cabrisas, there are six ministers removed in 2024.

In recent months there has also been an unusual number of changes in senior political positions in the country, totalling around ten governors, vice-governors and first provincial secretaries of the PCC. In most cases the reasons for these dismissals have not been disclosed.
