Economic activity in our country closed 2021 with an advance of 13.3%

The Automotive Association of Peru (AAP) affirmed that the peruvian economy registered a significant growth in 2021, after reviewing information from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), in which they indicate that the Peruvian economic activity showed in the last month of last year an advance of 1.72% compared to the same month of 2020, driven by the performance of the accommodation and restaurants, agriculture, transportation and storage, trade , services provided to companies and telecommunications.

Meanwhile, national production throughout 2021 registered a positive annual variation of 13.31%, thanks to the contribution of the manufacturing, construction, commerce, other services, mining, transportation and storage, and accommodation and restaurant sectors.

“It is important to point out that this result is explained in part by the improvement in the indicators after the acute situation that the country went through in 2020 (lower basis of comparison), caused by the health crisis caused by COVID-19. Likewise, when comparing the performance of 2021 compared to 2019, economic activity expanded by only 0.8%,” said Alberto Morisaki, manager of Economic Studies at the AAP.

When disaggregating the information provided by the INEI, by economic sectors, it is observed that, last December, the commerce sector increased 2.69% at an annual rate, while throughout 2021 said activity grew 17.82%.

As part of this improvement in the economic indicators, the increase in the automotive sector stands out, an activity that advanced by 32.58% in the year under review, driven by the greater sale of motor vehicles, in line with the economic reactivation of the various sectors.

The sector was also driven by higher sales of motor vehicle parts and accessories and motor vehicle maintenance and repair services.

In the same way, the sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and their parts, pieces and accessories grew, driven by demand in the provinces and having become a work tool for economic activities such as the delivery service.

Finally, Morisaki indicated that it is very likely that economic activity will drastically moderate its growth during 2022 and will be between 2% and 3%. This behavior would be influenced by several factors: on the one hand, most economic sectors would continue to recover due to the elimination of restrictions implemented by the Government to contain COVID-19, which in turn would continue to boost employment, although this it would be low quality.

However, the political instability that the country has been going through in recent months and the lack of clarity regarding economic management have been affecting the expectations of both consumers and businessmen, harming the level of consumption and investment, important pillars for the national economic growth.
