The fight for mayoralties and deputies of CDMX continues in court

The fight for mayoralties and deputies of CDMX continues in court

The Magdalena Contreras mayor’s office, where Morena candidate Fernando Mercado was declared the winner, is also being contested in court by the current mayor seeking re-election, Luis Gerardo Quijano.

“An election that was full of inconsistencies, which we denounced throughout the electoral process and also on the day of the election. Our only wish is that the right of the people of Contreras to decide is respected, that their votes are counted one by one,” he accused.

In Tlalpan, the opposition candidate, Alfa González, is also fighting the validity of the election, of which Gabriela Osorio, of Morena, PT and PVEM, was declared the winner. She claims that the Morena candidate carried out early campaign actions, omitted reports of her campaign expenses and exceeded spending limits, in addition to buying votes.

Morena is disputing the results in three of the five municipalities that the coalition made up of PAN, PRI and PRD managed to retain, these being Coyoacán, Cuajimalpa and especially Cuauhtémoc, the district where the process has made the greatest progress before the capital’s Electoral Tribunal.

Morena member Caty Monreal has demanded before the local Electoral Court a total recount of the ballots in the election for the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office, of which Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, standard-bearer of Va X la CDMX, was declared the winner.

The TECDMX decided for the second time to completely review the vote, after the Regional Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) requested a new resolution, considering that there was not sufficient justification. However, Rojo de la Vega, until now the elected mayor, challenged this decision again.

“He is afraid, I don’t know what he is hiding, I don’t know why he doesn’t want the packages to be opened. 89 That’s the only thing I’m asking for, that’s the only thing I’m requesting. Why am I requesting it? Because there were many anomalies, there were many irregularities,” Caty Monreal responded.

In contrast, Rojo de la Vega has accused Ricardo Monreal – Caty’s father – of using his influence within the local Court to favor the Morena candidate, through the presiding magistrate Armando Ambriz Hernández and the magistrate Osiris Vázquez.

“Not only did they not pay attention because they know it is illegal and they have no arguments, but they also go around the law to get their way and of course, above all, to fulfill their duty to their friend Monreal,” said Rojo de la Vega.

Jorge David Aljovín, an electoral law specialist and professor at the Universidad Iberoamericana, sees Cuauhtémoc’s case as evidence of strong political influence on local electoral authorities in the capital, in this case against Senator Ricardo Monreal, father of the Morena candidate for mayor.

“It involves a rather political wake, especially the power of the Monreal family not only in Mexico City but also in the capital of Zacatecas, these two elections cannot be read separately,” he said in an interview with Political Expansion.

In the capital of Zacatecas, the election was annulled on July 10, rendering the majority certificate of opposition candidate Miguel Ángel Varela Pinedo invalid, allegedly due to pressure from Governor David Monreal.
