Havana without Gazelle taxi service due to fuel shortage

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- Havana has once again been left without public transport service. State-owned road taxis called Gazelle due to lack of fuel.

“The taxi service provided by Micros Gazelles has been temporarily affected due to instability in the fuel supply,” Indian a statement from the company Taxis Cuba.

As he explained, since Tuesday “difficulties have arisen with the supply at the points designated for Metrotaxi vehicles, which is why it has not been possible to cover the routes on the established itineraries.”

However, drivers have guaranteed “part of the service” on the routes with the reserve they had left in their vehicle tanks.

The company apologized for the interruptions and reminded that during the night and early morning, taxis stock up on fuel to provide the route service to the population of the capital on the following day, but this has been impossible due to the lack of fuel.

At the end of March, a survey carried out by the government showed that 78% of respondents said they used Gazelle minibuses, according to a Facebook post by Transport Minister Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila.

However, although Rodriguez Davila says that more than half of those surveyed are satisfied with the service, the Gacelas, as they are known in the city, do not provide service after 9 pm, which is when they give them “freedom” to do their things, a source told CubaNet.

“That is to say, at that time and throughout the night is when taxis are served at more than 200 pesos each trip,” he says.

This Havana native said to CubaNetthat, after 8 at night, on the shortest route, which is from Toyo to Havana, the Gacelas drivers charge 200 pesos.

In the minister’s own post, many Cubans complained about this situation.

“Often drivers make up plans to cover requests that are not part of their service during route hours. And the service they provide at night is really abusive and only affordable for a limited sector. Paying for their services at those hours becomes abusive and prohibitive for the vast majority of Cubans,” Alejandro Sánchez complained.
