Four members of a family, including three minors, died in a neighborhood in the capital of Nicaragua after a wall collapsed on their home due to the heavy rains that continued to hit the Central American country on Saturday, authorities reported.
The Nicaraguan government reported on its official website El 19 that the incident occurred on Friday and that the victims are a 49-year-old man and his three children, ages 8, 9 and 12. The report added that the children’s 42-year-old mother managed to survive and had “minor injuries.”
The family lived in the Hialeah neighborhood of Managua, a central part of the city where in recent days the rains have caused rivers to overflow and flooded streets and avenues.
The authorities “have taken the necessary measures to ensure the safety of the residents of the area,” the report said.
The rains are caused by an atmospheric disturbance that is moving northwest of the Caribbean Sea and will cause more intense rainfall in the coming hours over the northeast of the country, according to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter).
