Deputies approve extension of deadline for submitting report on Penal Code

Santo Domingo, DR.- After leaving the issue on the table in yesterday’s session, the Chamber of Deputies approved this Thursday the extension of the six-day period requested by the special commission of legislators studying the bill to reform the Penal Code.

The committee reviewing the bill that came from the Senate and was approved by the deputies in the first reading last week must present the report on the controversial legislation no later than next Wednesday, July 24, one day before the end of the current legislative session.

Alexis Jimenez (PRM), President of the special commission, made the request for an extension through a document that was read in the chamber by colleague Francisco Solimán (PRM).

“Given that the period granted by the Plenary has not been sufficient to complete the analysis of the initiatives, the special commission (….) requests the honorable Plenary of the Chamber of Deputies to grant it a period of six days, from the date of receipt of this report, to continue with the work plan established by the commission, and thus conclude its study and submit the corresponding report,” states the text signed by Jiménez.

It is recalled that the head of the commissioners said yesterday that the deadline would be until Tuesday the 23rd of this month.

Upon leaving the ordinary session, the congressman reserved the right to make statements to the media.

The president of the Lower House, Alfredo Pacheco, clarified that the commission could submit its report before the appointed date.
