The possibility of suffering a cardiovascular event as a sequel to the coronavirus increases within 12 months of having suffered it, according to a new study carried out in the United States that indicates that 15 heart attacks were recorded for every 1,000 people who had covid-19 compared to 12. every 1000 in people who did not have it, reported the Buenos Aires Cardiovascular Institute (ICBA).

The study published in the journal Nature Medicine, was carried out by a group of Research in Epidemiology, Clinics of Saint. Louis, Missouri, and involved 153,760 people with COVID-19 belonging to the United States War Veterans health program.

Juan Pablo Costabel, head of the ICBA Coronary and Hospitalization Unittold Télam that “it is known that the impact of COVID 19 can generate acute extra-respiratory complications, among which cardiovascular involvement is one of the most worrying.”

“However, until now we did not have clear information on the long-term cardiovascular risk that suffering from some form of Covid-19 could imply,” the doctor explained.

Costabel analyzed that these types of studies “could be magnifying the differences” because they are based on “very heterogeneous populations.”

“In Argentina we do not have the data on the incidence of post-Covid in cardiovascular diseases yet. We did see an increase in cardiovascular problems at the end of each wave of coronavirus”John Paul Costabel

However, he stressed that this sequel to Covid “is the same as what happens with other viral infections, such as influenza or influenza-associated pneumonia. When it is seen that the causal association is possible and that the same thing happens in other viral infections, it does not call the attention.”

“In Argentina we do not yet have data on the incidence of post-Covid in cardiovascular diseases. We did see an increase in cardiovascular problems in the country at the end of each wave of coronavirus,” said the cardiologist.

He indicated that this increase “It is related to the fact that many people stopped doing the cardiovascular controls that they should do or take their medication and risk factors such as sedentary lifestyle and smoking increased. We still don’t know if this increase is due to this lack of controls or to covid itself.”

Costabel stressed that “we knew that Covid in its acute stage has the ability to form blood clots, so venous and pulmonary thrombosis did not attract our attention that they occurred, now the increase in arrhythmias, strokes, heart attacks, we did not have them above all away from the acute stage of the coronavirus.

“A certain sequela is generated in the blood vessels of the heart that can cause heart problems away from the acute event. The interesting thing to analyze is that this risk can be had by those who have severe or mild forms of coronavirus and both those who have or do not have cardiovascular history,” he said.
