Panama City Mayor’s Office launches plan to care for ‘homeless people’ in capital city

With an operation that began in the town of Ancón, the plan of the Mayor’s Office of Panama began to
address the problem of people living on the streets of our city.
In this first coordinated effort, 10 individuals living outdoors were rescued, many of them battling drug addiction. These people were received at the municipal gymnasium in Santa Ana (Club de Leones del Marañón), where they were given food, clothing, medical attention and facilities to clean themselves.

They were later transferred to two rehabilitation centers: Clamor del Barrio in the 24 de Diciembre district and Lavados por la Sangre in Alcalde Díaz.
The operation not only focused on providing direct assistance to those in need, but also included measures to ensure the safety of all participants, with Municipal Surveillance units keeping a close watch and beautification crews tasked with meticulously cleaning the area.
“This is just the first step in a comprehensive, scientifically-based plan that the Mayor’s Office will carry out,” said Director Cunningham.

“We are committed to effectively and humanely addressing the challenge of people in our city,” he said.
Cunningham also explained that the Mayor’s Office will convene various institutions linked to the issue, to involve them in the solution, “we are going to create a comprehensive care network.”
With this remarkable initial effort, the Mayor’s Office of Panama has demonstrated its firm commitment to the community and its determination to improve the living conditions of those who need it most.
