More than 150 pilot whales were stranded in Geographe Bay, Australia, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attraction reported, indicating that at least 30 of the cetaceans died.
Fortunately for the rest of the whales, hundreds of volunteers, including wildlife officials, marine scientists and veterinarians who traveled to the beach where the mass stranding occurred, helped them return to the sea, saving them from suffering the same fate as their companions.
The beach is located about 285 kilometers by road south of Perth, the capital of the state of Western Australia.
So far scientists have said they do not know the cause of the stranding.
