Cuban sticks to the top in Ibero-American Chess

The rise of double Cuban champion Carlos Daniel Albornoz in the Ibero-American Chess Championship, which today celebrates its sixth round in the Mexican capital, stands out in an event in which Luis Ernesto Quesada, also from Antilles, kept up a good pace.

The latter appears seventh, owner of four points after agreeing a draw with the Spanish Alvar Alonso, while Albornoz reaches a similar accumulated victory against Julián Estrada, another Iberian.

Although by tiebreaker Albornoz – subtitler of these events in 2019 – is in 11th place, the most significant thing about his rise is that he has accumulated two consecutive victories and now he is barely half a line behind the leaders.

The figure of 4.5 lines is exhibited by six men, including the Spanish Jaime Santos who shows the best tiebreaker. The Uruguayan Georg Meier, the Paraguayan Guillermo Vázquez, the Cuban who represents Mexico Juan Carlos Obregón, the Argentine Sandro Mareco and the Spanish José Fernando Cuenca are the others in that group.

Michel Alejandro Díaz and Dylan Berdayes also reached four units and precisely the second of them will be the opposite of Albornoz this Wednesday.

Quesada will live a duel that is presumed complicated, since he will move black pieces against the Peruvian Jorge Cori, defending monarch and who started unstable, but has managed to climb positions with a couple of successes in a row.

The contest brings together 167 competitors from 27 countries and for several of the Cubans involved it is ideal as preparation for the National Championship, which will host the city of Santa Clara from next March 1st.
