Since this year, the urban cleaning service rate has risen between 77 cents and 1.76 bolivianos in La Paz. The update is made on the basis of the variation of the Housing Development Unit (UFV), published by the Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB), the mayor of La Paz, Iván Arias, said on Monday.
“It is an update that is minimal. For example, if your electricity consumption is between 0 and 50 kilowatts, in 2021 if a user paid 2.10 bolivianos as a cleaning fee, with the update for 2022 they will pay 2.87 bolivianos, that is, an increase of 77 cents”, explained Arias.
In another case, he cited that if your electricity consumption is between 51 and 100 kilowatts, last year you paid four bolivianos for garbage collection, and with the update for this 2022 you will pay 5.76 bolivianos, an increase of 1.76 Bolivians.
“This increase of around 25% is not significant, I would like the population to see how we are moving forward and how we will multiply those cents into thousands, we will show the reactivation plan in the following days”, he argued in contact with Fides.

The municipal authority maintained that urban cleaning rates greater than the amounts indicated are for those consumptions that exceed 101, 201 and 301 kilowatts/month, those who pay between four and 9.4 bolivianos, whose increases do not correspond to most of the paceños.
“We are not charging an 86 or 96% increase in the urban sanitation rate, but an update to the UFV,” he said.
Arias specified that the update of the amount of the urban cleaning service rate is a regulation made by the Mayor’s Office of La Paz in compliance with Law 2434, of December 21, 2002, which provides that “the rates, values, amounts, patents, rates and special contributions established in the laws, will be updated with respect to the variation of the UFV”.
This Monday morning a group of people protested at the facilities of the La Paz municipality for the rise in the urban cleaning fee.
In this regard, Arias said that he wanted to explain what the norm provides, but that he only received expletives and insults, and they even called him “pitita”.
