The Chancellor of the Republic, Cesar Landapointed out that Peru will continue working for the return to democracy and respect for human rights in Nicaragua. His statements were given on the occasion of the death of the Sandinista guerrilla Hugo Torres.
“Hugo Torres, a political prisoner arbitrarily imprisoned after denouncing President Ortega, has died in Nicaragua. Peru will continue to work with the international community to contribute to the return to democracy and respect for human rights.”, the minister wrote.

Hugo Torres was one of the emblematic leaders of the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua. He died last Saturday, eight months after being arrested by the government of Daniel Ortega.
He was born on April 25, 1948 and was known as “Comandante Uno”. He had been in prison since June 13 of last year, when he was accused by his former comrade in the struggle, President Ortega, of being, along with forty imprisoned opposition leaders, “traitors to the country.”
