Opponents criticize Ortega’s “cynicism” for his participation in the EU-CELAC Summit

Opponents of the Daniel Ortega regime criticized the arrival of the foreign minister Denis Moncada Colindres to the third Summit between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (EU-CELAC), in Brussels, Belgium.

The representative of the Nicaraguan dictatorship made his entrance on the red carpet on Monday, July 17, being received by the President of the European Council, charles michel, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and the president of Spain, Pedro Sanchez.

Moncada’s arrival was made on the date on which Nicaragua, especially Masaya, turns five —July 17, 2018— from having been massacred by bullets by paramilitaries, in what the Ortega administration called the “cleaning operation.”

Given this, the former ambassador of Nicaragua to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arthur McFieldspointed out, through his Twitter account, that “shame cannot be hidden.”

He also mentioned that the Ortega dictatorship, through Denis Moncada, is walking at the Summit “with the blood of 355 murdered Nicaraguans, dozens of tortured and disappeared, and complaints from the UN for crimes against humanity.”

For his part, the former politician Juan Sebastian Chamorro He referred to how “difficult” it is to understand “how regimes that repress, imprison, and exile are received on the red carpet.”

«Diplomacy often disappoints and sometimes surprises with positive results. At the EU-CELAC Summit, interests that are valid but not universal such as human rights have been prioritized,” added the former presidential candidate.

For the member of the political council of the Blue and White National Unity (UNAB), Juan Diego Barberenathe European Union must be «clear and transparent in that, although it is true that it is a joint summit with CELAC, political regimes that have been accused of seriously violating human rights, committing crimes against humanity and eliminating the political dissent.”

“I think it is important for the European Union to echo that international summits are also to make a clear political assessment of the situation and the quality of the States that participate,” he stressed.

Honduras and Brazil come out in defense of Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela

Despite the pressure and condemnation of the Nicaraguan opposition to Ortega’s repressive actions, neighboring countries participating in the Summit, such as Honduras, have come out to defend the dictatorships of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

“We raise our voices so that all patrimony illegally withheld from the Venezuelan people be reinstated and that the barriers that prevent us from normalizing our commercial relations with brother countries such as Nicaragua be eliminated,” said Honduran President Xiomara Castro in her speech.

Also, the president of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva He once again defended the end of “blockades and sanctions” against the dictatorships of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

At the same time, he called for an end to Russia’s “hostilities” against Ukraine, a term that was criticized by Arturo McFields, since the Brazilian president omits the word war, which is what the Ukrainian government has been waging for more than a year.
